Testimonial from Nature Awareness student and his mother~

"Diamond is awesome!" says Rory, nature awareness student at Riekes

Diamond was my pre-teen's nature instructor for two years at Riekes Nature Awareness Program. He is extraordinary in many ways. He listens to each child, discovering his/her individual interests and has a gentle way of drawing out a child's curiosity and appreciation of nature. He shares his stories, knows great nature-related games, and teaches primitive skills, that they come home thrilled to know. We feel very fortunate to have had his mentorship.
~Kelly, mom to Rory

~Diamond Mendez loves exploring and sharing his knowledge of  the outdoors with others.   His history with Riekes Nature Awareness program began when he was integrated into the teen program in 2004. He then became an assistant for the pre-teen programs a year later, which eventually lead to his current position  as an instructor now for 4 years.  Diamond has been with BEan in Nature for a year and is as super excited to be teaching our Teen Ongoing program and our Survival Summer programs.

Diamond is WFA (Wilderness First Aid) Certified.  He has participated in various nature connection professional development programs and primitive skills gatherings, such as Wintercount, Art of Mentoring, Native Eyes, The Buckeye Gathering, The Tracker School, Barn Dances, after school programs and more.

OUR AMAZING TEEN
ASSISTANTS!

~Jeremy Bean loves the outdoors and hiking and exploring the land is his passion. Primitive skills such as fire by friction, tracking and playing nature awareness games are but a few of his specialties!  Jeremy has been in Riekes Nature Awareness since he was 6, he is now 18.  He has assisted BEan in Nature since it began in 2013.

Jeremy has grown into an amazing mentor and a budding nature educator, due partly to the fact that he has gained skills on his own with his own focus and attention to nature awareness, but also due to his assisting at Riekes in the Pre-teen programs for the past 3 years.

~Joshua Bean has a passion for adventure and has an amazing gift with animals. He enjoys exploring and hiking the hills near his home, always coming back with great stories and amazing finds from the land.  Joshua started nature awareness when he was 5 1/2 and he is now in the teen program at Riekes.

Joshua assists in BEan In Nature, Nature Science and Native Naturalist classes.  He has been our assistant since 2013.  His ability to help the children connect to the land and to each other, and have a great time outdoors, is what make Joshua such a great mentor.

Our Female Teen Assistant, for Girls classes, Michelle and Sarah!
"We will be there again this year! Just want to give you a heads up on a really fun camp! My girls did this with Marisa last year and LOVED it! If your girls love the outdoors and likes learning primitive skills, then this camp is for them. Marisa is a fantastic teacher, she knows when to offer a lot of guidance and when to let a child explore on their own."
Heather (mom to Sarah 13, Michelle 11).

Students will develop a strong connection to the outdoors and learn safe, basic, valuable living strategies through hands on exposure to primitive living skills and nature awareness practices.

"It gives me such joy to know that so many children in our region are being exposed to the wonders of nature as well as developing social responsibility through Service Learning projects taught by you.  I only wish Liliana could attend more of your classes in the future. Liliana will be leaving CA with an appreciation and love for nature, due in large part, to the experiences she had with you.  She went from being a girl who didn't like to get her hands dirty, to a girl who now picks up bugs, digs in the dirt and loves hiking in the woods!  Thanks for helping to cure her of Nature Deficit Disorder! :). We will miss you very much and hope you will keep up your amazing work of positively impacting children through nature immersion."

Fondly,
Cathleen, Greg & Liliana Dyck

Preteens and Teen Youth will interact with nature by familiarizing themselves with different aspects of ancient survival living.
